Capella's Review of NAB 2025

Capella is no stranger to NAB. We’ve been there each year since we started in the video industry over a decade ago. Here’s how our booth has changed over the years.

We’re always working to improve our live encoding and make it as easy as possible to migrate from on-prem to the cloud. This year, we announced high-density channel encoding and Oracle Cloud support for our Cambria Stream and Cambria FTC software products.

But - believe it or not - NAB isn’t all about Capella, so if you weren’t able to make it this year, here’s what stood out to us at NAB 2025:

What was something that stood out at NAB this year?

Cloud based workflows have been talked about for years now, but this year, NAB showed us that they are finally becoming practical. The shift has been slow - it takes time for software providers to build solutions that work just as well or better in the cloud, and it takes our users time to take the step away from on-prem.

Our Capella team noticed that this was the first NAB to make us think the world is ready for real-world cloud encoding. We’re excited to see these tools get easier to implement and use, more flexible, and genuinely useful.

AI was another topic that kept cropping up amongst visitors and exhibitors.

How has NAB changed over the past decade?

One key thing that has changed is the tech. Live streaming used to be a side topic, but now it’s front and center. A decade ago, it was all SDI and satellite. Today, it’s cloud workflows, low-latency streaming, and IP everything. Fixed GOPs and GOP alignment are now critical for live-to-VOD and multi-angle streams, and a technical necessity for seamless delivery.

This is why Capella has put extra focus into developing Cambria Stream, our in-the-cloud live encoder. Two features that we’re particularly excited about are Dynamic Swap and VPU Support. Dynamic swapping ensures that live streams stay running without interruption by allowing machine instances to switch out periodically and stay “refreshed”. We’re also working on integrating VPU’s (Video Processing Unit) to our live encoders to deliver lower-cost streaming at peak efficiency.

Are you interested in these two features? If so, contact us by pressing the button in the top right corner. We can send you the latest build and a demo license when these features become available.

Did you see anything at NAB that excited you about where the industry is headed?

As the past few years have foreshadowed, cloud-native production and encoding tools are here. It’s now clear that the industry's future is remote, flexible, and scalable.

Another Capella exhibitor mentioned that although all the AI developments sound interesting, it’s hard to tell what direction the industry will take with this new and expanding technology. Rather than jumping in at the deep end with revolutionary ideas, it seems like AI is being used more for smaller niche enhancements, at least for now.

What kinds of conversations did you have with users? What are they interested in?

We had lots of valuable conversations with customers across industries, from casual users to more technical. More than ever, they are interested in the live streaming space and in acquiring a straightforward, powerful live encoding solution. If that sounds like you, be sure to contact us, because we will be officially releasing our newest version of Cambria Stream in just a few months!
